Thank you to everyone who made our Veterans Day 2009 collection drive and sort/pack event a huge success!

During our two week collection drive leading up to our November 14th sort/pack event, thousands of items were generously purchased and donated by volunteers across Los Angeles and surrounding cities from the South Bay to the San Fernando Valley.

"This year, for the first time, the United States will honor September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Eight years ago, the tragic events of that Tuesday morning inspired Americans to come together in a remarkable spirit of unity and compassion. In that same spirit, we call on all Americans to join in service on September 11 and honor the heroes of that dark day."

As a follow-up to our blockbuster two-day blood drive on Inaugural Weekend in January, 30B hosted another successful event at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, more than tripling their usual Saturday take. Nearly 90 people came in, yielding 76 units of blood!

Hundreds of South Los Angeles residents turned out to get free blood pressure, blood glucose, HIV/AIDS and STD screenings, as well as learn about low-cost local clinics and local, state and federal insurance programs.

Fair attendees have their blood pressure checked by Dr. Franco of Cedars-Sinai and the nurses of the JWCH Institute.

30BARACK held not one but two Health Care Organizing Kickoff Meetings on June 7, 2009 to accomodate a high level of interest in the community, and had over 60 people sign up to volunteer at our National Health Care Day of Service Health Fair on June 27, 2009. Thanks to all 30BARACK Earth Day Volunteers!

30BARACK recruited nearly 50 volunteers for an Earth Day effort, in partnership with North East Trees, to restore the wetland at Rio de Los Angeles State Park. Los Angeles City Councilman Ed Reyes kicked off the event with welcoming remarks including a big shout out to 30BARACK volunteers for lending a hand on such an important and worthy project.

It was a magnificent day; all the participants had tons of fun, enjoying good company and community spirit, and left filled with an enormous sense of satisfaction at time well spent.
